Abstract
“Bereketli Hilal” olarak da adlandırılan ve kadim zamanlardan beri birçok medeniyete ev sahipliği yapmış olan Mezopotamya, kutsal kitaplarda da yer almış ve bu topraklarda yaşayan milletlerin kıssaları etrafında kutsal kitaplar, birçok hadiseyi anlatmıştır. Kutsal kitaplarda anlatılan kıssalar, Batı dünyasında birçok gezginin merakını cezbetmiştir. Bunlardan biri de 1900’lü yılların başında okuduğu dini metinlerin büyüsüyle Ortadoğu’ya seyahatler yapan Mark Skyes’tir. Skyes, Lübnan’dan başladığı yolculuğu 7.500 millik uzun bir yolculuğa dönüşmüş, yolculuk boyunca notlar tutmuştur. Tuttuğu bu notlar, Ortadoğu topluluklarıyla ilgili olduğu kadar, bu toplulukların inanç, tarih, yaşam tarzı, gelenek görenek, ırksal özellikleri de barındırmak-tadır. Bu anlamda onun notları birinci elden bilgiler içermektedir. Zira Skyes, yolculuk boyunca kendisine bilgi verebilecek hamallar, at satıcıları, koyun tüccarları, aşiret reisleri, mollalar, katırcılar, güvenlik görevlileri ve toplumun değişik tabakalarındaki kişilerle sayısız mülakatlar yapmış, gördüğü yerlerin haritalarını çıkarmış ve bu yerlerle ilgili stratejik bilgilere yer vermiştir. Bu anlamda onun bu seyahatleri sonucunda topladığı bilgiler, İngiliz hükümetinin Ortadoğu politikasının şekillenmesinde başat rol üstlenmiştir.
Skyes’in bu makalesi de Mezopotamya’nın kuzeyine dair yaptığı yolculuk esnasında tuttuğu notların bir araya getirilmesiyle oluşmuştur. Skyes, çalışmasında Mezopotamya’nın kuzey bölgesinin coğrafi, tarihi, kültürel ve demografik özelliklerinden bahseder ve bu coğrafyaya yabancı olan İngilizlere birinci elden bilgiler sunmayı amaçlar.

Abstract
Mesopotamia, which is also called the "Fertile Crescent" and has hosted many civilizations since ancient times, has also been mentioned in the holy books, and the holy books have told many events around the stories of the nations living in these lands. The stories told in the holy books have attracted the curiosity of many trav-elers in the Western world. One of them is Mark Skyes, who traveled to the Middle East with the magic of the religious texts he read in the early 1900s. Skyes’ journey, which he started in Lebanon, turned into a long jour-ney of 7500 miles, and he kept notes throughout the journey. These notes he kept are not only about the Middle Eastern communities, but also the beliefs, history, lifestyle, customs and racial characteristics of these communi-ties. In this sense, his notes contain first-hand information. Because Skyes made numerous interviews with por-ters, horse dealers, sheep traders, tribal chiefs, mullahs, muleteers, security guards and people from different layers of society who could provide him with information throughout the journey, he made maps of the places he saw and included strategic information about these places. In this sense, the information he collected as a result of his travels played a leading role in shaping the British government’s Middle East policy.
This article by Skyes was created by bringing together the notes he took during his journey to the north of Mesopotamia. In his work, Skyes talks about the geographical, historical, cultural and demographic characteris-tics of the northern region of Mesopotamia and aims to provide first-hand information to the British who are unfamiliar with this geography.
